Surfrider Foundation - Eastern Long Island Chapter

Meeting Minutes

July 26, 2003 Meeting

Due to personal health and work related issues, we shuffled our leadership roles. Unanimously voted on:
Chairman, Eugene Alper
Vice Chairman, Bob Casper
Secretary, Jay Levine
Treasurer, Jack Citera

We discussed vehicular acess to Turtle Cove which is opposed by our chapter due to the fragile nature of this tiny cobble beach, which is easily accessible by foot from a 200 space public parking lot. The National Parks Service is approaching their final decision whether vehicles should be allowed on this special cove, which was deeded to East Hampton Town in 1986. Our chapter has formed alliances with local environmental groups, and we have been successful in having a temporary gate built which has been up for a year now.

A decision on legal surfing access in Camp Hero State Park is also in its final stages. New York State Parks Service is due to announce their Interim Surfing Policy, which our Surfing Advisory Committee worked very hard towards, with an unyielding Fishing Advisory Board, which has had a vice grip hold on the Park Services' ear. We await this interim plan and we discussed possible measures to take if it is not acceptable.

Bob Casper volunteered to organize a beach cleanup in Montauk. Details will be announced soon.

Jay Fruin volunteered to re-design our website, the new website is due very soon...bear with us during transition. We thanked Evan Schumann for developing and maintaining this, our original website.

Local Erosion Control Expert, Gregory Donohue gave a fascinating and enlightening talk on the history of bluff and dune erosion control on Long Island , and their short term and long term effects. All present were very grateful for his knowledgable presentation.

Finally, Michael Halsband announced his Surf Nite Movie Extravaganza at Guild Hall in East Hampton, Wed. August 13th at 7 p.m., underwritten by Quicksilver. Featured will be Michaels' latest film plus the long awaited "Dolphin Glide" by George Greenough. Some hot local action will also be featured, plus a board raffle and more! The event will be a fundraiser and membership drive for the Surfrider Foundation. I'm proud to say that everyone at the meeting volunteered to distribute advertisements and help manage the event........ You don't want to miss it !!!
