Great Caesar's Ghost - Surfrider

Turtle Cove - Parking Access

UPDATE* - May 4, 2004 - The fence is back...

The Town of East Hampton is allowing vehicular access to a fragile coastal area. This violates Federal guidelines for the use of the land and provides marginal benefit due to the rugged access and limited parking.

Surfrider Long Island recommends use of the New York State Parking field and a foot-trail to gain access to the area. This two-minute walk is a much better alternative.

Surfing Access at Camp Hero

UPDATE* - May 4, 2004 - Surfing legal - with restriction... click for details

Camp Hero State Park near Montauk Point, is home to some fickle, yet powerful pointbreaks. There is however one small problem. Surfing is illegal in this and other New York State Parks in Montauk. There really is no good reason for this restriction.

Dunehampton

UPDATE* - May 4, 2004 - Dunehampton defeated ...click for details

The Dunehampton group just recently filed a lawsuit naming everyone who wrote in or spoke out against them at recent hearings. Named in the suit are Surfrider representative Bill Lucey, our spokesman in this issue, Surfrider member Bruce Lieberman, Scott Cullen of The Nature Conservancy, and of course Sothampton Town. This is a perfect example of the kind of issue that the Surfrider Foundation must be outspoken about.

An attempt to subvert coastal restrictions

Prompted by the creation of the environmentally irresponsible Village of Westhampton Dunes, homeowners along Southamptons' ocean shore between Wainscott and Southampton Village are trying to create their own village. Named Dunehampton, they are trying to circumvent new coastal legislation which is clearly good for the coastline, but potentially threatens their expensive beachfront homes over the long term.

Montauk Point Lighthouse Revetment Discussion

UPDATE* - May 4, 2004 - Debate Continues.....

After a year of dialogue with the A.C.E., The Corps has stated that some modifications in the design of the project may be made. Tim Maddux,Coastal Engineer on Surfriders Environmental Issues Team, refuted with scientific common sense, the Corps statement that the proposed structure would not adversely affect the two adjacent surfspots. The Draft Environmental Impact Statement, which was due almost a year ago, has still not been released. This is probably due to the Corps budget being slashed by Congress. If and when the D.E.I.S. is released, there will be a public meeting, and comment period.

The Army Corps of Engineers had intended to rebuild the entire stone revetment surrounding the Montauk Point Lighthouse. Our chapter has been asked for input by the Corps. Our main concern is that no harmful effects, especially reflection and refraction waves (backwash) come to any of the adjacent surf spots. We will continue to keep you posted as information becomes available......

Environmental Protection Agency - EIS for Dredged Material Disposal Sites on LI

Bill Turselino was able to attend the hearing on December 10, 2003 and present the Surfrider prospective.

"We (Surfrider) are opposed to designation of dredged material disposal sites anywhere in the Long Island Sound or the open ocean. The research presented in the draft EIS is essentially a snapshot of damage already done to a once vibrant benthic and pelagic ecology. Designating permanent disposal sites will guarantee that alternatives to open water dumping will not be actively pursued nor ever become an economically viable alternative. If dredged material is not suitable for beneficial re-use then it should be removed from the ecosystem." Rep. Bishop entered an opposing statement as did many others.

This EIS has been in the works for a long time. Kind of like a lot of confusing scientific goo to justify a decision that has already been made. The reps from Connecticut seemed all for it.... even brought up the threat of oil spills if channels aren't dredged. Seems the battle is taking a NY vs. CT flavor. Seems CT has huge "dredge the toxic harbors and dump it in the LI Sound" plans. Lieberman sent a lame letter of support for dredging. The most persuasive statements were all opposed.

Surfrider thanks Bill for his efforts and a great job on behalf of the entire chapter. It is people like you taking the time and effort to work within the system to make a difference, who give our chapter credibility and clout.

Army Corps of Engineers - Current Long Island Projects

The New York District of the Army Corps of Engineers is planning to deal with erosion issues along the entire South Shore of Long Island. Some plans are in process and others are in the formulative stages. Our chapter has begun a dialogue with the Corps on these projects. At the same time the N.Y.C. Chapter of Surfrider is currently involved with the Long Beach area. Click on the links below to view some of these projects.
